STAGE 2 re-opening (13 May 2020)

With the government announcement on Stage 2 re-opening of certain venues,  your Executive Committee met to discuss our future re-opening plans.

At this stage... we advise the Bassendean Bowling Club is likely to OPEN in June 2020 (exact date to be confirmed).

Whilst some venues may open on 18th May under restrictions, we have  decided to wait until more information is available from Bowls WA and renovation projects currently underway are finalised.

Any opening will be subject to government guidelines, future COVID restrictions and therefore may be subject to change.

Roll ups can continue as previously advised by contacting the club on  9279 1949 and advising a date / time / no. of people - max 4 per rink.
(Open on Wed, Fri & Sat 12-4pm only)

All players must adhere to the new hygiene practices of signing the  register, sanitising pre & post roll ups, cleaning mats and jacks  after use, using allocated green/rinks etc.

In addition to the above please follow standard guidelines;

  • Stay 1.5 metres away from other people whenever and wherever you can;
  • Maintain good hand washing and cough/sneeze hygiene;
  • Stay home when we’re unwell, and getting tested if you have respiratory symptoms or a fever; and
  • Download the COVIDSafe app so we can reduce future spread & support contact tracing.

We look forward to welcoming everyone back to the new and improved Basso Bowlo soon.  Please stay safe and watch this space for future updates.

ROLL UPS with restrictions (26 April 2020)

The West Australian Premier Mark McGowan has announced the easing of restrictions for indoor and outdoor gatherings in WA.

As of Monday 27th April up to ten (10) people will be permitted to gather indoors or outdoors on the proviso that strict  social distancing continues to be practiced. Given this, Bowls WA  advises that it will now support the use of Greens given the required  restrictions and health requirements such as social distancing are  maintained.

Individual clubs will be responsible for regulating the use of their greens and control of members within the advised framework.

Note that nationally agreed, specific  recommendations on the use of Greens are included in a Bowls Australia  release from CEO Neil Dalrymple  – Bowls WA fully supports those  requirements.

Read that release from Bowls Australia here – https://www.bowlswa.com.au/2020/04/27/bowls-australias-covid-19-advice/

It is imperative that clubs introduce, follow and police these strict guidelines if greens are to be opened.

Ken Pride
Bowls WA Chief Executive Officer

EFFECTIVE 12PM ON WEDNESDAY 29TH APRIL 2020, THE CLUB WILL BE OPEN FOR ROLL-UPS ONLY (please refer to board for Open Greens).

As long as the following guidelines are followed, bowls activity can  include practice and/or roll-ups, social play and smaller club  competitions (e.g. singles and pairs events) on outdoor greens only.

  • The responsibility lies with individual Bowling Clubs to ensure that:
    • they are fully aware of and compliant with their own State Government legislation and STA advice, and
    • all of these guidelines are adhered to and engage any staffing/volunteers required as necessary to fulfil the guidelines.
  • Hand sanitiser is to be made available at the entrance to the Bowling Club and beside each green in use.
  • Disinfectant spray must be made available beside mat/jack boxes.  After each use, all mats and jacks must be thoroughly cleaned before  being used again.
  • Any club bowls that are loaned to players are to be thoroughly cleaned before and after use.
  • Bowling Clubs may need to implement a booking system to facilitate  rink bookings, to confirm with guidelines. Best practice is that a  register of attendees is kept, just in case a communicable illness were  to occur.
  • No indoor Bowling Club meetings are to occur at this stage (except  in WA). Any meetings held on the Bowling Club premises should be held  outdoors, employ physical distancing of 1.5m and be limited to the  number of people determined by social gathering laws (currently a limit  of two people in ACT, NSW, QLD, TAS, VIC and NT and a limit of ten  people in SA and WA). Individuals should leave the premises immediately  after the conclusion of meetings.
  • Where possible, outdoor-accessible toilets should be open. At the very least, hand washing facilities should be available.
  • No barefoot bowls groups to be hosted at this stage.

Bowls Activity:

  • Subject to the social gathering and distancing  legislation/restrictions, only four people are allowed to play together  and the 1.5m physical distancing rule is to be observed at all times.
  • There must be one rink space (an empty rink) between each rink in use.
  • A maximum of 10 persons is allowed per green at any one time.  Bowling Clubs may need to have a booking system in place to facilitate.  Bowling Clubs with more than one green need to ensure that compliance is  achieved in respect to social gathering restrictions.
  • All players are to use separate mats and jacks (or ensure that the same player on each rink places mats or places/rolls jacks).
  • Other bowls equipment cannot be shared between players (e.g. bowls, cloths, measures etc).
  • Disinfectant spray must be made available beside mat/jack boxes and  between each use all mats and jacks must be thoroughly cleaned by  players.
  • Players should practice safe hygiene at all times, including washing hands for at least 20 seconds before and after bowls.
  • Individuals must leave the premises immediately after conclusion of play and cleaning of equipment.
  • Coaching should be limited to no more than a coach and two other  people at the time and all practicing physical distancing of 1.5m during  the coaching session.
  • No barefoot bowls activity.

People at a higher risk of severe illness (those aged over 70 and/or  those with chronic medical conditions or compromised immune systems) are  encouraged to remain at home whenever possible.

BBC response to COVID-19

 The instant and abrupt end to the 2019/20 season presents a testing  scenario. On one hand both our women’s and men’s sides have had a  fantastic year and is one to be proud off.  On the other hand, the  uncertainty of COVID-19 and the sudden stop to our season’s trading  presents other challenges.

Our strategic response to this as a  club will be to keep the club as safe from COVID-19 as possible while  still trading to help cover costs.  This will include:
– Slowing things down a little
– Adapting to the ever changing operating environment;
– Continuing to trade at a more conservative level
– Avoiding creating large crowds at the club
– Keeping the club open to our members

As a result, we have made the following changes:
1. We have moved back to our winter trading hours but still remain open 7 days a week;
2. We have cancelled functions and corporate events until the beginning of May 2020;
3. We will work with the Ambassador Dart club and Darts WA to agree what comes next for them;
4. We will establish guidelines for entry to the club that will be posted on the door and be visible inside;
5. We will start work on the refurbishment of B Green;
6. We have stopped our Quiz-nites until further notice;
7. We have deferred the wind up until May;
8. Friday night meals will stop until further notice;
9. Our independent vote counter will conclude the vote count  for men’s and women’s bowls in all grades and we will post that  information in the future;
10. The Exec Committee will meet fortnightly in the immediate future to monitor and adjust further as we go.
11. We will keep you informed as things change – and they no doubt will.

This  will draw on our available cash reserves and reinforces the need for  sound financial management.  I believe we can manage that but this  obviously depends on the ongoing severity and duration of future  COVID-19 developments.

What can you do?
– Comply with government and health guidelines especially self-isolation after international travel or if visitors arrive;
– Stay at home when sick or recovering after illness;
– Continue to support the club – come down for a beer and a catch up;
– Maintain good hygiene and wash your hands regularly;
– Cover up when sneezing or coughing;
– Use your member card or credit card instead of cash and swipe it yourself if possible;
– Avoid bringing large groups to the club for the time being.

We  will work our way through this.  Please be responsible and consider  others at all times, especially those that are most vulnerable.

Bowls WA has announced the following:

Following the release from Bowls Australia earlier today, the  Bowls WA Board has decided in the interests of safety for its members to  postpone or cancel a number of events.

The Board further recommends that clubs act similarly in postponing  or cancelling social, club and championship events to minimize the risk  to its own membership, staff, volunteers and visitors to the club.

Specifically, the following events will be impacted:

Ladies Metropolitan Pennant Finals

As per the email forwarded by Pieter Harris to competing clubs, this  event will be finalized today and tomorrow, but at the differing venues as noted to lessen the impact of crowds:

Premier League / 1 White / 4th Division at Yokine BC

1st Division Green Nth and Sth at Osborne Park BC

2nd & 3rd Division at Manning Memorial BC

Men’s Metropolitan Pennant

Both Thursday and Saturday competitions have been suspended immediately and indefinitely.

Although suspended, given the current health climate it is likely  that these competitions will be cancelled, however that decision will be  taken once further direction is provided by Government and Health authorities in the days and weeks ahead.

Any promotions or demotions to the current divisions will be considered in due course.

Ladies Country Week

This event has been cancelled; Country Committee delegates have been  informed by email this morning for wider distribution and all clubs  notified by email accordingly. As a result the annual Country vs Metro  match will also be cancelled.

Entry fees will be refunded to entrants, but we do ask for patience in this regard given the size of the task.

Ladies IZRR Fours

It is strongly recommended that this event be cancelled. Country  Committee delegates have been informed of Bowls WA’s position this  morning, including the host Southern Zone.

State Over 60s Mixed Pairs

This event has been cancelled.

Other State events

A decision on the playing of other state events will be made in coming days.

General Club Events

It is the strong advice of Bowls WA that all social, club and league  fixtures/events be cancelled.

The current position of authorities is  changing daily and will no doubt become more stringent in the days ahead.

The safety of our members, particularly given the age demographics of  many is our most important responsibility now; your support in this  will be appreciated.

Ken Pride

Chief Executive Officer

Bowls  WA has urged all clubs to cancel all club events including corporate and other bowls.

Our corporate Bowls Windup scheduled for Wednesday 18th March has been cancelled.

Your executive committee is meeting tonight (17/03) to discuss our club event finals and I expect we will play them but it  may be some time before that happens.

I am sorry to convey that news and it effectively means the 2019/20 season is over.

Linton Pike.
